July 5, 2004
Waking up at the Belvidere rest stop at 5 AM felt a little cranky. The air was wet from the previous night's rain and the car windows were fogged but good. I slept in the passenger seat while Angelo made a bed of the hatch, on top of our bags. He claimed it was more comfortable than the reclined seat, while I begged to differ. It worked out well, I guess, because I liked my spot, while he liked his. We made french press coffee on our camp stove and walked around the area to stretch our legs. Remarkably enough, we felt great. Our spirits were optimistic and our day's destinations, exciting.
Badlands, South Dakota
1060 AM
Buck Owens' Hello Trouble dominated the airwaves of the Badlands. Little brown rabbits skittled around peeking prairie dogs and the occasional deer. I don't know if I should attempt to describe the landscape of the Badlands. I guess I could say it is otherworldly. Because we were there at sunrise, we got the goods. The weather remained drizzly and spitting, but the magnificence of the place overwhelmed the conditions we were in. I wondered how high the spires could have been centuries ago. It is a place that is inspiring and also beautiful. I had no idea that it looked like it did and subsequently, I was grateful to Angelo for bringing me to it.
We meandered through the park stopping when any changes of rock and sand formation showed in the early morning light.
When we left the national park we realized it was time for breakfast. So, next stop, Wall Drug!
