South Dakota has a definite love for the music of the 50's and 60's. The radio offered several oldies stations, to the point that when one was breaking up another was easily found on the dial. Search and you will find!

Hello Dolly played by wonderful Satchmo got our spirits up while we passed several miles of open fields and gradually rolling hills. Then the Beach Boys took over with Good Vibrations. This song made me realize that I shouldn't slag new music for having meaningless and/or ridiculous lyrics. What am I expecting, philosophical debate and constant storytelling? Do wap wap.

Semis rolled by at a good clip while our little Hondawagon lolled up and down and hummed happily in synch with our upbeat spirits. One of the numerous semi-trucks had this statement on its backside " We support the USA in the war on terrorism". In addition to this, many vehicles had stickered yellow ribbons on their trunks which said "Support our Troops". The feeling I had about these statements is that I had better watch my speech, observations, and ideas while moseying through the various travel stops. Angelo and I often debriefed about Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 documentary during this stretch of highway. In truth, I was disappointed by the film's hasty, stretching conclusions and feel it was slapped together with less than ample discretion. Keep in mind that when I entered the movie theatre to watch the film, I wanted to validate my reservations about Bush and agree wholeheartedly with Moore's point of view. I wish that I could agree with the portrayal of the film's message, but I don't really know what the message was supposed to be. Was it the fact that Bush and the bin Laden's are friends and business partners? Was it the fact that Bush is a useless businessman who somehow attained the position of President by the idiocy of his character? Was it that Bush is an idiot, full stop? Was it that the troops in Iraq are nasty and cuddly at the same time? Was it that Iraqis are helpless or difficult? Or that US senators don't like their kids going to war? I don't really know. I do know that specific details could have been beneficial to the viewers if the topic was less general and more deliberate. Moore vehemently dislikes Bush, but don't we all?

You're So Vain took over the airwaves and shortly thereafter, we passed Laura Ingalls Wilder's home. It was the home of her married life with Almonzo versus her 'Half-pint' life with Michael Landon and Walnut Grove. Little House on the Prairie is one of my all-time favorite TV series. I watch it whenever possible and find myself crying along with Charles at any difficult moment. While growing up,I loved Melissa Gilbert and aspired to get such a cool nickname from a lout like Mr. Edwards. I often wondered how so much disease, hardship, death, and poverty could happen to one family. They were a happy family, hardy and rugged, like the landscape around them.
